Well, after watching Bambi when you were young, you may have thought of getting a new pet, a skunk. Yes, that’s right. The oh-so-cute skunk named “Flower” has gotten your attention and your admiration because he’s so sensitive and well, flowery. If your child watched Bambi, you’d get the same reaction. Your child will ask for a skunk as present on his next birthday or on Christmas. But we all know that skunks in real life are not that cuddly nor friendly. Sometimes we wonder, how could a small and adorably cute animal make an odorous mess of himself or your home for that matter.
Well, before going through the basics of skunk smell removal, you must first know the source of the smell, the victim of the skunk’s scent glands. Locating the source is the first step before you can go through the process of how to get rid of skunk smell. It may take you a few hours, a few days, or even a week before you can find the main source of the odor. This, of course, will depend on how big your house or your land area is. The intensity of the smell also depends on how many parts of your home were victimized by the skunk visitor.
If you have a dog or a cat that tried to play and interact with the skunk, expect that the smell is everywhere since your pet has been in several locations trying to shake off the foul odor. After locating the source of the odor, you have to let fresh air take all the skunk smell away. So if the source is inside your home, put out the furniture or the carpet, everything that the skunk sprayed on. If your pet was sprayed, put him out of the house. If you were sprayed on, jump in the shower at once and repeat washing until the skunk smell is gone.
Furniture, carpets, clothes, pets, cars, and other things should be washed with a mixture of baking soda, peroxide or vinegar, and liquid soap. The approximation of ingredients vary depending on the thing that has been sprayed on. If the smell has been removed, you can air dry the things in the backyard and let the sun do its disinfecting job. If the smell has lessened but not completely gone, repeat the washing and rinsing process. To have a better smelling atmosphere inside your home, open the windows, let fresh air in and bad odor out. Better yet, start cleaning the air filters of your air conditioner and your furnace. And before you know it, the skunk smell is completely removed.
